The context, membership in long decline
Trade union membership as a share of Australian employees. The 2024 figure of 13.1 per cent was the first rise since 2011. This panel is fixed context and does not respond to filters.

Read before citing, data caveats
The register is a floor, not a census. MRC states its list is not exhaustive. Totals mix paid grants with multi year forward commitments to 2028, so this is not an annual flow figure.
Two amounts are estimates. The 2023 WorkSafe grants to Ballarat Regional Trades and Labour Council and the AMWU are recorded at the program cap of $300,000, with actual amounts undisclosed.
Definitions are contestable. The union linked category includes PICAC ($60M, 28 per cent of the core total), an employer body (Master Builders Australia) and Scarlet Alliance. Use the union linked toggle to see totals both ways.
The source is an advocacy organisation. The MRC is a Liberal aligned think tank. Its figures are drawn from official registers and this dashboard verified every program subtotal to the cent, but purpose descriptions are edited extracts and the framing is adversarial.
ABS nuance. The report says membership is still falling. The ABS reports 13.1 per cent in 2024 as the first increase since 2011. Both are shown here.
Independent corroboration. The Victorian Auditor General found grant funded Migrant Workers Centre staff spent 319.5 hours on election campaigning across 2018 and 2019, with monitoring failures at both the department and the centre. That finding appears in the supplementary layer.
